This is a step-by-step picture tutorial for how I knit the Mother Bear pattern in the round using toe-up sock techniques. Techniques used are magic loop, Judy's Magic Cast-On, two-at-a-time sock knitting and kitchener stitch. While the video does not go into the details of these techniques, helpful links can be found below or on the side bar.

Note: This version does not match the in the round pattern found on Ravelry, but it's how I knit.

As a side note, my laptop is having a lot of issues so getting the tutorial up was a challenge. I am hoping to podcast in a day or so, I'm sorry I'm late, especially during the challenge!

I'm sorry, I had a technical issue tonight. Tried to record quickly to beat the storm, I did, but I didn't pay attention to the fact that I was using the wrong mic and you can't hear anything I say. I have played with the sound repeatedly and can only get it loud enough to be considered "annoyingly quiet".

I will have to re-record the whole thing on Tuesday (Monday night is knit night)

Well we shall see if this works. I have been thinking that I never have the time or inclination to blog these days. By the time I pull out things to photograph, get decent pictures, upload them to the computer, resize them, edit them, write about them.... well it doesn't happen. But maybe I can take a few minutes and and do a quick video.

So, this is basically a "prototype"... a "let's see if we can even make this thing work" type of episode. If you even want to call it an episode.

Kitten Smitten!

First off... some day I'll post some finished items and works in progress, I have good knitting things, just behind in that part of blogging.

But in the meantime, after Beezy's death, Tigger kitty has been very lonely. He has been crying, he doesn't like being alone all day by himself so I made the decision that it was time to look for another kitty for him. After some back and forth last week, enter our new baby girl. She is from Shelter from the Storm, a very nice rescue center. Her name was Petunia but that just wasn't going to happen. I was calling her Miss Kitty, just to have something to call her and it's sort of become Missy. She comes running so I guess she's picked her name. She's just over 3 months old right now.

Tigger wasn't sure of her at first, but to be fair, when they met we were all at my parents' house where they have Scout-puppy who Tigger isn't too fond of. The picture below is from the early meeting. Once we got back home to our place, they've been getting along fine. Playing chase, following each other.... he licks the top of her head now and then. They will be just fine! Now if I could just get them to sit still long enough to show a picture together. They are both Zoom-Kitties!!

My Beezy Girl, may she be at peace

Years ago, a 21yo girl attempted to sell vacuum cleaners. She wasn't particularly good at it but in her travels she found a little chocolate brown kitten. The kitten had a frostbit half-ear so the owners did not want her. The girl took this little kitten home....

I already had two other cats that were known as "The Cat" and "The Little Cat" so this new kitten became "The Little Brown Kitty". (ok, I'm not so good at names) Little Brown Kitty eventually became LBK and later Beezy through interference from my mother who seems to think pets should have real names.

Beezy was always fiesty. The first day home alone, she managed to terrify the other two cats, both fully grown males, and claim dominance over the room in the apartment that had the food, water and cat litter. She remained little but never lost this independence.

The other cats moved on. "Little One" went with a boyfriend during a break-up. "The Cat" (renamed Trax) adopted other members of the family. But Beezy remained true, and while, over time, I went through bad times and good, rough periods and wonderful events, Beezy was always there, a constant companion for 17 years.

She has always been a wonderful, healthy kitty. She loved the new condo because she could run and play with her toys without Tigger realizing and pouncing. As a kitten she was always grumpy but amazingly she became incredibly loving the older she got. She had the loudest purr ever and would purr at the drop of a hat.

Then a couple weeks ago there was a significant change. My poor girl would not eat. Not even her favorites. She passed up KFC, she passed up ice cream. Within a week she became skeletal and she appeared to have given up. She would not purr, she kept hiding and if you tried to find her, she would drag herself to a new hiding place which was sad to watch.

Stitches Midwest

Went to Stitches Midwest today with friends. I'm so glad I got to spend the day with each of them!!

In purchases today, I got a Fibersphere kit with an extra container. The containers can attach to each other, making it easier to work with two yarns at once. The kit came with one container, the clear project bag, a measuring pen and the wristlet.

This light fingering weight was an incredibly good price and I love the teal color. It's 60/40 cashmere/merino. Yummy!!

Creatively Dyed, this isn't my normal colors but I love it!

I've been wanting to try a Herbert Niebling pattern, and this Lyra kit was beautiful. There was a completed one there and it was gorgeous! (Rav Link) The yarn is super soft 5% cashmere, 95% Australian merino

At the same place, I bought this pattern, but not the kit for this one. The kit they had was the same yarn as the pictures, this was also done up in the booth. It was beautiful, although I'll probably eventually do it in something else.

A small thing, but fun, a "yarn" bracelet. I've been wearing it all day since I purchased it.

So today I finished a pair of socks and thought "wow, I haven't posted in a long time". I call these the WW socks because I only knit on them while at Weight Watchers meetings. They are a thicker weight yarn than usual which meant I didn't have to go to meetings for 5 years just to finish them. Now I need to figure out what the next WW project will be.

Anyway, the pattern is my own concoction of other people's ideas. The toe is Judy's Magic Cast-On and the heel is Fleegle's. Both of those are linked on the side bar. The stitch pattern is stolen from Froot Loop Socks on Knitty. The cuff is my own, I combined a standard 1x1 rib while continuing the mini cables where they existed in the pattern. And then the bind-off is the new Jeny's Suprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off which I'll add to the side bar when I'm done with this post.

I'm still working on the Evenstar shawl that I posted way back in March. I'm at exactly the half way point in the border repeats. They are knit perpendicular to the rest of the shawl and are a bit slow for me. Only because I keep getting myself distracted. Yesterday I finished one repeat in 25 minutes and another one took me 2 hours... guess which one I was actually concentrating on? The full pattern is now available for sale on Susan Pandorf's website, plus you can see what a finished one looks like. I decided not to use the beads. They were taking a really long time and my bead selection was not adding anything to the beauty of the shawl. I've seen others that just look stunning, mine didn't have the same pizazz (right side has beads, left doesn't). I'll find another use for them eventually.

I'm also working on an Odelia sweater out of Knit Picks Swish Worsted in Merlot Heather. The color is much richer than it looks on my screen here. I wanted a sweater that would still work for me if I continue to lose weight and I wanted a color that can act as a neutral, so I can throw it on over almost anything. Maybe even the air conditioned office if I get it done.

I also have a pair of socks I'm working on randomly. They are from Wendy Johnson's Socks from the Toe Up. I'm using yarn that is leftover from my Enchanted Wood shawl finished in February. I'm a lot further than this but don't have current pictures. I am actually finished with one and starting the gusset on the second sock.

Oh, and I bought new shoes today. I needed brown dressy sandals for work.

Evenstar Clue 1 finished (spoiler pic)

Evenstar is a circular shawl designed by Susan Pandorf. This is a mystery shawl, meaning that we get "clues" or pieces of the pattern at regular intervals. With this one, we get a new clue every other Friday. The sign-ups for this particular mystery are now closed, but the complete pattern will be made available for sale after the mystery is done, sometime in May.

Evenstar marked the kick-off of Susan's Fellowship of the Rings series. That series subscription has just recently become available and this post has swatch pictures of the upcoming projects.

Anyway, here is a picture of what it looked like at the completion of Clue 1. Since we are a week into Clue 2, I'm hoping that this isn't a surprise spoiler to anyone who is participating.

P.S. The Enchanted Wood shawl from the last post was also a mystery pattern. For that shawl, the clues came every week and I didn't post anything until the very end.

Accomplishments

I know, I don't post very often, but here's a couple things....

First off, I finished another shawl. This was a kit and knit-a-long from The Unique Sheep called The Enchanted Wood. The beads were supplied by Ellen from Earth Faire. It was a great experience. I need to take some other pictures that do the yarn color justice but you can see the beautiful pattern.

Friday, I wore it to the office. This isn't the best picture but it's proof that I did. My manager said it was nice to see me actually wearing what I wore instead of carrying it around in a bag. (also you can't tell but another new accomplishment, that's my new office, it has an actual door, this is a huge deal at work to be out of a cubicle)

And last but definitely not least, I've been working to lose weight since Halloween. The picture on the left is actually the picture that got me started. Today I passed a major milestone and a friend asked for a pic. When losing weight slow and steady, it's hard to see sometimes, but putting these side by side shows a difference I'm proud of!

New Paint Color

Been painting son's bathroom this week, it's been pink and he had asked me to re-paint and picked out a nice taupe color. For the record, I hate painting, with a passion, and this experience did not change my opinion, it reinforced it. But below are pictures of the pre-paint color and a post-paint color. I just have to share this.... When we went to Chicago, we went to the Lego store. While there, son got this Power Miners set (combination early Christmas and his own money). Well, if you look at it you can see there is a rod in the middle that the mine cart travels on.

Son had opened the box to look at it but we didn't plan to build until the next day and in between that time, our cat chomped that single piece to bits. Son was totally crushed because it was an important piece. we managed to get it to sort of work but not quite.

So I went online and sent a message to Lego customer service explaining what happened and asking how to get a replacement. I didn't hear anything, but today the piece showed up in the mail with a very nice note, including a message saying that they hoped the cat was ok!!

I'm really impressed and had to share!

Chicago Trip

Well, let's see, even though I've been to the train station plenty of times, I got lost on the way there and couldn't even figure out how. On the way home I realized that they've completely ripped up the ramps which then made sense. I was never super lost because I could figure out where I was, just not how I got there. Anyway, we made the train but couldn't figure out why the parking lot was totally packed and then the train was packed too... took me a bit to realize that there was an awful lot of Badger red on the train. Apparently there was a game down in Evanstown. This was the only trip where I've seen standing room only on the Metra.

Anyway, we got there, I knit part of a sock on the way down. We saw the Christmas windows at Marshall Fields (ok, Macy's but I just can't get used to that). They were better this year, the last couple years Macy's hadn't done as well as the old windows. This one was a cute poem about how Santa and the elves use the power of Belief to collect and answer all the letters to Santa that are sent from around the world.

We had thought of going to Navy Pier to see a Yu-gi-oh Regional Tournament but we got started later than we had planned and decided against it by the time we got there. As usual the Lego store was good, but packed with people and hot. (I don't know what it is but it's ALWAYS hot there) But now we have some Legos and tomorrow will be Lego Pajama day.

Somehow on the way back to the train, I ended up on the lower streets which was a little frustrating as I kept looking up going "I want to be up THERE" but at least I always could tell where I was. We walked really fast to catch the train but got there fine. On the trip back we had to pick up some of those same Badger fans and the conductor on that trip was having fun with them. "anyone wearing red outerwear pays double today"

Over all it was a pleasant day. And the weather was great, I can't remember another trip that we didn't even have to wear coats!

Bizzy Chevy Socks

First, I finished these socks ages ago, back in August. I wore them the other day and it occurred to me that I never posted them as I was waiting for permission. These are again designed by the wonderfully sweet Shannon of Unwind Yarns. The pattern is called Bizzy Chevy Socks due to the Chevron stitch pattern. The yarn is also one of hers, called Shiraz in the "For the Boys" colorway. It’s wonderfully smooshy, these are one of my favorites to wear just for pure comfort.

The pattern is well-written and the stitch pattern is simple to follow, I actually knit on these during last season’s Stitch N Pitch game. I do think that the pooling of this particular pair wasn’t quite what I wanted, I love the look right around the ankle where the color repeats are shorter where you can see more of the zigzag effect, but that's a property of this colorway. I will definitely be using the pattern again with some self-striping yarn or a yarn that has shorter color bits that maybe won't pool.

Wow, last time I blogged was September, I really should blog, it’s been a long time. What can I blog about? Well there’s… no, wait that’s a little personal to put public. OH, I made a… but that’s a Christmas present and so-and-so actually looks at my blog. Oh, I did … well that’s a little embarrassing… Oh I knit a… crap another Christmas present.

That conversation has been going around and around my head for awhile and yet I feel like I have nothing to share... So what does that leave?

I’m working on some Christmas presents and you’ll see them after the holidays.
Things at the new condo are still really good, I think this is one of the best decisions I’ve made
We’re happy, healthy and of sound mind. (well as much as we ever are)
I’m going to try to get healthier so I’ve joined WW just recently. Normally I hide this but maybe doing it “publicly” will be good incentive.
Now that AJ’s a bit older, he’s spending more time with his friends which means I get some more time to see mine which is making a happier me.
Work is still going really well, I had a good review recently and I’m still loving this job. (another one of the best decisions I’ve ever made)

So, not to leave it totally empty, here’s a picture of some afghan squares. They are approximately 12” squares. (putting them next to each other, I see that one of them may have to be redone) I need 12 of them to make a lap sized blanket for my grandmother to use while she watches TV. (she’s a very tiny woman, so 3x4 will be plenty)

Ok, not really hunting, I knew where they were...

I took today off for no reason except that I can and wanted a brain break. Decided that since my son was in school all day, I'd do something for me. I went to Google Maps and typed in "yarn shops, wisconsin" and then picked a path and went to four shops that I've never been too.

First, The Shaggy Sheep in Manitowoc. Here I had the best luck to be there when the UPS man came with a single box, a box that contained the new Cat Bordhi sock knitting book, Personal Footprints. The woman behind the counter was wonderful. Even though I was never there before, she grabbed a chair and asked me to sit and chat. I wish I had her name.

Next I went to Magpie's Cottage in Sheboygan Falls. Here I met Kim who gave me a full tour of the cottage and told me about all the different yarns they carry. It's a very cute little store that also has fabrics and beads. Kim was definitely all about having people pet the yarn!

Grafton Yarn Store was next. I've heard good things of this one but it's a bit out of my way so I've never been. I wish I was closer because the women here were helpful to each other and chatty and it's big, open and beautiful. It's location is very pretty too.

The Knitting Knook was the last of the day and was by far the busiest of the lot. It used to be French Knots II but I never visited before today. The women here were friendly and laughing about how little actual knitting they were getting done but you could tell they were having fun.

Circular Shawl

There has been so much going on (and most of it not what I want to blog about) that I haven't had time to post and lately not as much time to knit either. But I did want to post an update on the circular shawl. This picture is the completion of charts A-D, it will look better when it's blocked, but it's pretty and coming along. I'm actually one repeat into chart E (out of 8) but I don't have that pictured yet. Now that the rounds are over 500 stitches, it takes longer to make significant progress so I just knit a bit whenever I've got a bit of time and try not to think about it too much.

I now understand why my mom comments that crochet is faster than knitting. I took the crochet 101 class on Thursday, started this scarf Friday and finished it Saturday. Seriously!

Today I updated my drawer pulls. Not the most exciting thing in the world but those ancient ones have been bugging me for years, I just never did anything about it.

Mom found this guy on her windshield of all places. Son got it off and sort of as a joke, they framed it as a housewarming present. But it's a nice job with a glass shadowbox, signed and dated on the back. I put the quarter so you can see the size!

So What Am I Working On?

Even with moving, I have been working on some things...

This is a star-ball for kids. It's supposed to be a surprise for someone at work that just recently had a baby girl. I've been ignoring it lately as I have a bit of startitis since I moved to the new place. New places need new knitting apparently.

This guy will eventually be a monkey. It's part of a kid's "learn to knit" kit and when I wanted something sort of quick after long days, it was a good choice. Eventually he'll even get arms...

Today I went to a beginning crochet class at Loop Yarn Shop. The part in the image below the hook is what I did in class (single, double, triple and half-double). Above the hook is where I used the book to figure out how to increase in each stitch and then do a shell stitch.

Last but definitely not least is my first circular shawl (this will meet 2009 Yarnie Resolution #5!). I'm a bit further along than this but I didn't take a new picture because it needs to be stretched out to see it properly. The pattern is Exonumist's Circular Shawl by Wendy Johnson and can be purchased off her website or in Ravelry. (You should follow links just to see the pretty pictures).

There's also a pair of cuff-down socks, but again they are a secret for now. But I'm done with one and almost done with the leg of the second.

Condo Pictures, Finally!

It seems like every time I was going to take pictures, stuff has been in a state of disarray or it's too dark to take any that are good. So I'm going to just post what I have with some explanations.

The main living area is kitchen, living room and "office" altogether. Please ignore the boxes, there's a section of this area is still the dumping ground. The bar stools are a big plus, the ones that were here were really gross. These at least are cute! The flower pictures are some of the ones that I took earlier this year. The fuzzy thing on the couch is a car seat cover that my dad used to use but doesn't fit his new car and the cats love it.

My son's room is really big but you can't really tell that here. But you can see the bed. He used to have a bunk bed, the top bunk didn't have a mattress, just a piece of wood. (it had one once upon a time, long story). He used that wood piece to build Legos or armies. My dad and I took that wood, along with some 4x4's and made a table for him to do that. (and apparently they've migrated to the desk too!) The hammock chair was a surprise for him too, we hung that together.

Pictures from my room. My dad helped me hang the floating shelves. The bedspread I've had for awhile and I've loved how well it matches my new red walls. Tigger is a happy kitty.

This is one of my quiet spots, the balcony in my bedroom. From it I can see my little tiny front yard and at night it gets very pretty sunsets. (I know the picture is blurry, but you can get the idea)

Here is my favorite spot in the place, my quiet corner, my knitting corner. The cabinet is a media cabinet I bought for storing yarn. With glass doors so dust won't get to the yarn. The picture above the cabinet is a picture that MojaveSis took. It's a picture of a dragonfly. She framed it and mailed it as a housewarming gift. I'm amazed that the background color of the image. and the blue trim she gave it so perfectly match the colors in the bedroom.

You can see it's one of Tigger's favorite spots too!

Quick update

The move has gone very smoothly, everything is out of the old place and the new place is unpacked enough to be comfortable. My dad is coming this weekend to help out with some things around the condo (drippy faucets, drape hardware to hang, nothing major but all necessary). It will be the first time anyone in the family besides myself and son have seen the place.

I'm not posting any pictures yet because my son is still at his grandparents and I want him to get a chance to see the place with all of our stuff in "real life" before I post pictures.

Look, I have keys! (I'll change the locks but I'm amused by these keys)

To those that don't know, there was a horrible huge fire at a local factory (Started late Sunday and it's still smoldering now) and our town was evacuated yesterday... (http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/50091637.html) This of course added to stress levels (especially since my bank and the closing location were evacuated too). Even though the evacuation was called off in the evening, I stayed with a wonderful friend from work who opened her home to me. We chatted until bed while I knit, watched some TV and I got to sleep on a real bed instead of an air mattress. I am so grateful to her!

Now the movers come tomorrow so here are my boxes! There are more in other rooms and a bunch of "self-carry" items but these are the biggest piles.

P.S. I won't have internet for a couple days so I'm not ignoring anyone. I might have to steal some air time at Starbucks

As of July 7th, I will officially be a home owner. (Happy Birthday to me!!) I am totally thrilled and excited! I'm also totally bogged down trying to get some stuff packed every day and worrying about what needs to stay, what needs to go, how am I going to move it all (I finally decided on movers).

So while I am getting a little knitting done in between, I'm apologizing right now for there being limited blog posts for awhile.

Son is at my parents house for big chunks of the summer which is a huge help to me. Knowing that he is safe, cared for and having fun (instead of dealing with crazy me) is a big relief. I can't thank them enough for offering! But at the same time, I miss him and I'm glad he'll be back for a visit soon!

In the meantime, here's my other helper. (I can't figure out where the camera went so this was taken with my phone)

Spring shows up in many ways!

The first Spring sock is complete (and the second one is on its way)

I took a picture of the flowering tree in front of our future place because I was so excited to have one.

Later, son and I went wandering all over local parks while I took lots of floral pictures. I took LOTS and of course only some came out properly, but of those I liked I had Walgreen's print out 8x10's. I'm going to try to find some decent cheap frames for them and use them as art work in the new place.

Condo Update: Inspection went well. There was one small concern with furnace so I had the heating/cooling guy come out. Turns out that what we thought might be a cracked secondary heat exchange was really just caused by a loose screw. But now the furnace and A/C have been serviced so I don't need to worry about them. Cheap peace of mind. Now I'm just waiting to meet with the bank tomorrow to lock in a rate.

Socks & short condo update

Both socks featured today are knit with Keegan Lane Yarns, both from the "A Club for All Seasons". The first finished socks are done with the Winter colorway, a color with inspiration from bluebirds. I don't think I ever posted on here but some know that I was originally depressed at the first sock not fitting. Luckily, a good wet block on the sock blockers and they fit! (still a little tight to get on over the heel but comfy after they are on)

The one in progress is from the Spring colorway and I'm loving the way it's coming out. I started it last weekend and it's already further than this picture. (the bottom picture is from the weekend when I sat in the park amongst the dandelions knitting happily and quietly)

The condo is going very well so far. There was quite a back and forth fiasco with another one that I never bothered posting about because it was going up and down so fast that I couldn't keep up and it was frustrating. This one has been smooth sailing so far. Son and I both love it, the inspection has gone well. Working on financing right now but not anticipating any troubles. In theory, I should be closing and moving in July, so spending some time packing already. Here's a picture of my favorite spot in my bedroom... it looks like the perfect spot to sit, knit, read or whatever...

Side note: I just added a widget for Plurking after an invite from the other Dragonfly-Vicki. I haven't done twitter or plurk but it seems to be the thing to do these days for quick updates.

Not-So-Secret Sliptastic Socks

I'll post more info on the accepted condo offer soon but I want to share this today.

Shannon of Unwind Yarns, whom I've spoken of before, asked me to test knit a sock pattern for her. After some technical review and then knitting, her pattern is in good shape, she'll be ready to sell it soon. That means, I now have permission to share my socks!

The pattern is called Sliptastic Socks, when she's ready, it will get added to Ravelry with purchasing information but in the meantime, if anyone is interested, you can let me know and I'll put you in touch with Shannon.

These socks are pretty and comfy and super stretchy. They would make perfect first socks because they will form around various widths. They’d also make great gift socks when you don’t have the receiver’s foot handy!

The yarn is Unwind Yarns Shiraz, also by Shannon. When she sent it to me to test knit with she said it didn't have a name, it was the "luck of the pot" which sounds like a great name to me.

I'm really surprised how similar these turned out, I didn't do anything to make them match up. -DFly

I'm really proud of how this first side has come out. It's not perfect, some of the floats are a bit too tight so it puckers a bit. Then toward the center, I had realized I was pulling too tight so I started doing looser (really well actually) but that more relaxed fabric means when it's sitting flat, it raises up in the center. But for a first time it's pretty good and I have the second side to do so I can try again.

I broke up my posts so I could dedicate one purely to Unwind Yarns but here's just some tidbits.

For other knitting, I finished the Boku scarf. I had to go back for a second skein, one skein was just too short for my taste. I love the way the colors change.

This is what happens when a son with a Sharpie says "Mom, give me your arm for a minute"

Very often Tigger likes to hide under blankets and we've had to start using this system so we don't sit on him. It just makes me smile so I had to share.

Experiences with Unwind Yarns

Shannon of Unwind Yarns is just a lovely person. I first purchased a skein of her yarn when I went to Stitches Midwest last year. (see here) That yarn became the Knotty or Knice socks. I've always loved her tagline "Throwing Sheep into Rainbows". I loved it so much that I joined a yarn club she has. The first month, I thought that I ordered soon enough to get that month's shipment but didn't see it. I emailed Shannon to ask if I should actually wait until the next month and she was surprised I didn't have my package yet. After giving it a little more time, she sent a second one. After some time went by, she emailed me saying it came back "Return to Sender", but I had never received. So we tried again. Third time was the charm and I got my package that time. (we never did find the first one).

In all this time, Shannon was so sweet and we talked a bit about other things and I've just grown to really love her personality, her yarns, the colors... just everything. So when she asked me to review some patterns and test knit a couple, I had to say yes.

So first, I test knit these Spazz Fingerless Gloves. The pattern can be purchased through Ravelry, here. The yarn she sent is her fingering Zinfandel line. It's wonderfully soft and nice to work with. (I've ordered more)

Son saw the gloves and kept trying to steal them so I told him I'd make him his own pair if he found some yarn he liked. Funny thing, Shannon sent some deep purple yarn from her Merlot Fingering line a few days later and he said "That's the yarn!" So in just about a week, I knit a second pair which he's not taking off. Also pictured is "Sparky" a dragon from WebKinz and a tic-tac-toe board he made in his 6th grade metal shop course.

As a side note, I'm also test knitting a sock pattern for Shannon that's going well but I can't share that one yet.

Anyway, I recommend checking her site out, trying her yarn, joining the Unwind Yarns Ravelry group (She's Khetala on Ravelry)

Food for Thought #9 - Theoretically Speaking

Appetizer: What did you have for breakfast this morning?: Omelet, hash browns and coffee. More than usual but we met friends for breakfast.
Soup: Phish or Monkees?: Monkees. Even the mention makes me start singing a weird montage in my head. "hey hey we're the Monkee's. People say we monkey around... Cheer up Sleep Jean... Oh what can it mean to a daydream believer... Catch the last train to Clarksville and I'll meet you at the station..."
Salad: What is your first reaction when you hear the phrase, “I don’t believe in evolution”?: Thankfully, I've never heard anyone say this. I guess everyone can have their opinions and beliefs, that's what makes the world diverse but there is so much evidence of evolution around us that I have trouble understanding how anyone could not believe in it.
Entré: What do you think about attempts to legislate science or even just how science is taught?: On the one hand, I think it is a good idea to have goals of what students should learn at various grade levels. But I think that trying to dictate how it is taught will limit what is actually learned. By having all different teachers with varying styles it's more likely that someone will be the one that makes it start to click, the one that suddenly make science interesting.
Dessert: Has the word “theory” been stripped of its scientific meaning or become loaded with excess emotional baggage?: Well, at work we use it when someone says how something software-related should work, we call it the theory until we can prove it one way or the other with some real test cases. It isn't meant as a good or bad, it just means that something is possible but not yet proven. I'm not sure that answers the question....

Appetizer: Do you view yourself as a mentor? Why or why not?: Yes, I find myself always wanting to learn and then share my knowledge. Whether it's teaching friends and family how to market themselves for jobs, teaching something technical, guiding my employees to expand horizons, spending a ton of time sharing knitting knowledge in real life and on Ravelry, I'm constantly trying to share. Plus, of course, as a parent, I try to teach my son the ins and outs of how to study, dealing with friends, surviving emotions and general life skills (like cooking pizza). I have never been one to hold my knowledge in, I believe that if I can help, I should try.
Soup: Other than your parents, who was most influential in shaping the choices you made in your life?: My son. People that know me today find it hard to believe but there was a portion of my life where I was very unfocused. I failed out of college, I went from guy to guy to guy to guy. (Friends said I didn't rebound, I ricocheted). I came home single and pregnant. Luckily my family, while not thrilled, took me in... took us in since we lived there for my pregnancy and my son's first year. After he was born, my life had purpose, every decision was suddenly about what was going to be best for him. I got a better job, I settled down, I went back to school.... I am the person I am because he came into my life.
Salad: Other than your children or siblings, whose life have you influenced most?: I believe that I have influenced others in ways big and small. My favorite people have been interns that were under my management and care. I always tried to make sure that they were part of the team, given true responsibilities that could add to their resumes and then help them market themselves for their first job after graduation. Since I have heard success stories from three of them, I know I did my job and I am so proud of them.
: I have similar feelings when I can teach someone something new in their knitting. Every time Apryl teases me about her sock obsession being my fault, I smile. I'm glad I helped her. I'm glad I can teach people new things on Ravelry. Of course there are lots of amazing people there but sometimes a simple drawing from me can give someone the "ah-ha" moment. Maybe it's not as life changing as helping people in their careers, but I believe it's valuable and it makes me feel good when someone gets a bit further.
Entré: What is your favorite experience as a mentor or mentee?: Ok, this one starts out a bit negative first... I once had an employee who initially did not report to me. He started as an intern, became a contractor and had a manager who would just correct his work if it was wrong. This employee, who was a wonderful person, became a bit lazy about his work because, well, it was getting corrected anyway and no one cared. Then his project shifted and he worked with me, his job was working within Business Objects reports in our company. I didn't tolerate the problems and would send the work back to him. One day, he submitted a report that was just horrible, by just glancing at it you could see that his report said that all motorcycles had about 8 wheels. I lost it, I don't lose my temper very often, especially at work, but I yelled at him. Later I apologized and we actually talked about it. But amazingly, from that point on, he totally turned around. He started trying harder, he started learning more about our reporting environment and just doing great work. Eventually, as all contractors must, he had to leave us. I helped him find another job and then didn't hear from him for awhile. One day he emailed me and said that he got a job at Business Objects (yes, the software company) and that he wanted to thank me. He said that when I got mad and expected him to work properly, it actually showed him that I cared and then he cared. It was the best email I ever received even though I still feel horrible that I yelled. (that certainly isn't the best mentor technique!) And for the record, he teased me periodically from that point on and told others that they really didn't want to make me mad. *blush*
Dessert: Do you have to know someone personally for that person to be your mentor? Please explain your position.: I believe that it's possible for someone to be your mentor that you don't know personally. Many people view the Yarn Harlot or Elizabeth Zimmerman to be knitting mentors. People like Ghandi or Martin Luther King influenced the thoughts of many people that didn't know them; However, in my own life, I've found that my most important mentors have known me, whether they had a large influence or a small. Some for providing direct guidance and some for encouraging me to think just a bit differently about myself and the world around me. For that matter, Lee makes me think every time he posts these questions. When I answer these, I feel like I'm coming at my own thoughts and feelings at an unusual angle and I come away knowing myself a little better.

Ok, my mom doesn't have a blog but she sent the following as an email and I just had to share with everyone else because I'm so impressed (and the story is funny). The names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty.....

First he was a he-man and all the girls loved him...then through a tragic accident, he became a paraplegic....but now, through the miracles of science...he's a GOD!

Translation:

He was MojaveKnitter's first Ken doll and when she was in 2nd grade and playing with the girl across the street, the girl broke him in the middle trying to make him sit. MojaveKnitter was heartbroken. And Mom couldn't fix him, that cheap plastic and all, so not wanting to throw him out, but now only played with when they really needed an extra doll, basically useless....he remained in the suitcase with the doll clothes.

BUT now, years later...(MojaveKnitter is 30 now) through the miracles of modern science, we can rebuild him! We can make him stronger.... faster..... better....no expence was spared.... Ok so it was some carpet thread, a button, little paint, glue and Fimo....but now he's Anubis and in with my Egyption dolls. Oh and those are parchment paintings on the background, not taking the plastic off, until I get my room box for this group...... someday.

Food for Thought #6 - Nature vs Nurture

Appetizer: Read the appetizer in full before acting. Focus on this screen. Then close your eyes and turn your head to the right. What is the first thing your eyes focus on when you open them?: Well, the first day I read Lee's post, I did this and my focus landed on my big knitting bag. It's the bag that holds all the small project bags. Doing it right now, I see peanuts because son just decided I needed them.
Soup: When something good happens to someone you work with, how do you react?: Assuming that it's someone that I know well, I'm truly happy for them and often proud because they've earned it and I've watched them work toward that goal.
Salad: If something happened in your career that doubled your income, what is the first thing you would do?: pay bills and buy a home
Entré: How do we acquire our drives, the parts of us that make us want to accomplish one thing versus another thing?: I'm not sure, I do know that it's only been in recent years that I've really discovered the things that drive me. I am driven my learning and then sharing that knowledge. I'm driven by helping others reach their goals, whether in their careers or just to finally knit that sock heel.
Dessert: What made you happy today?: See previous blog entry... yarn, shoes, lunch out!

Food for Thought #7 - Weekend Edition

Appetizer: When it comes to the weekend, do they usually measure up to your expectations?: I don't put that much pressure on my weekends. We may have plans, we may not. If we have plans they tend to be relaxed, time with friends or family. If we don't, it means a weekend home reading, knitting, video games... We get the chores done that need to get done but don't stress too much about it. Every other weekend we have bowling league. (Adult/Junior league so son and I are a team)
Soup: What good thing happened this week that you were not expecting?: Lunch out with my team today. It was not planned but it was fun, I need to make time to do that more often.
Salad: If one end of a scale is, “I like to have every second of my day planned and executed according to that plan”
and the other end is “I like to take life as it comes, completely spontaneously,” where do you fit?: I find this one a little difficult. When I have plans, I like them to have them go according to the plan but I don't like to have every minute of my day planned, I need true downtime where there are no expectations. I'm not good with spontaneity, this is something I've been working to improve in the past few years. Generally my first instinct to a surprise change in plans is "NO" but I have had to train myself to do a quick check and really think about these opportunities.
Entré: Do things just happen, or do we control what happens in our lives?: I believe that there is a fate that guides us, that puts us in the right place at the right time. However, as Kelly says in her responses I agree with the sentiment "luck is when preparation meets opportunity". I believe that taking opportunities to learn and grow will allow you to answer the knock when it comes.
Dessert: What are your plans, if any, for the weekend.: We are visiting my parents this weekend. There are no real plans when we are there so it will probably involve catching up, watching kitties play, knitting and watching BBC America (which we don't have at our place).

It's been a long few weeks at work. Not long days, just very intense days. So today I decided I was leaving at noon and taking a few hours for myself. First, I actually had lunch with my team, something I haven't been able to do lately. They were going out to a Philly Cheesesteak place so I joined in and then left from lunch.

I went first to Ruhama's, mostly to browse. I knew they carried a yarn that was specified in a pattern I saw recently. It would be a sweater's worth of yarn so I wasn't buying, I just wanted to see it in person, feel it, get an idea of what it was all about. I saw my yarn, got my info and then just browsed. I saw this really fun scarf with criss-cross pattern made with Plymouth Yarn Boku which gradually changes colors. I bought two skeins, different colors to make this. They gave me the pattern for free but I can't find reference to it anywhere else, even on Ravelry which is a surprise. Anyway, I had to start it so that I could show people what it was (plus it was fun to play with, this didn't take too long.

After the yarn, I went to Kohl's. I've been wanting some cute shoes that I can use with knit socks. I told myself I could spend $50 on cute shoes. The ones below were about $25! And they are really comfortable! I also got a pair of black pumps for $10, more of a staple item.

At the end of my free time, I came home and found a Sock Cinema shipment in the mail waiting for me. I'm so glad I pre-paid my clubs, I can just enjoy them. This one is from Princess Bride "The Man in Black", I think it's one of my favorites from the club. Plus, the bag is super soft suede. (It's already holding the Boku scarf above)

In other knitting news, I finished the first of the Fantastic Blue Bird socks. It was a fast knit, really pretty. It's a little snug, I'm hoping a wet block will help but to be honest, I haven't tried yet becasue I'm a little scared it won't work and then I'll be disappointed.

I've also just started Spazz Fingerless Mitts (Ravelry link), designed by Shannon of Unwind Yarns. The pattern is for sale but she's asked me to test knit it. I don't have pictures of that yet, it's not really far enough to show anything yet. But the yarn is beautiful! It's even richer than shows up in the picture.

This weekend we are going to visit my parents, we haven't been able to do that for awhile so I'm looking forward to it. Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend!

First Yarn!

Today I went to the "Learn to Spin" class. I was a little worried because I had never spun at all, but for my first attempts it went pretty well I think

The bottom right is something different, we got just a tiny bit of merino/silk in color to play with.

I bought this new spindle because the other one posted above is actually too light and it was hard to keep going. This new one has just a bit more heft to it and I tried a bit at home after I took the pictures and got some reasonable looking yarn.

I picked up this because it's pretty, something to strive for. It's called Sea Serpent. It seems really soft. I want to complete out that natural ball above and a kit of coordinating fiber batts before I work on this one. I need to learn not to overspin or I'll make that beautiful green turn out ropey.

In knitting, I've been working on this sock, it's just past the gusset. It's been a very fast knit, I started it last Sunday. It's the Rib Fantastic sock from Knitting with Handpainted Yarns.

Ok, I've had a terrible time with 5th picture in the 5th folder. Mostly because they end up being yarn or knitting and I've done those, or I have folders within folders within folders....

But recently son and I were doing some major cleaning and he found a CD labeled as pictures saved in 2004. I stuck that in the CD drive and here we go...

Ok, that would be Barbie furniture made out of plastic canvas. Later I would go on to work on a castle. I finished all the furniture and two and a half rooms. It's really pretty, sometime I should post it. But anyway, these were the very first pieces. I haven't worked on it since I started knitting though, knitting won my heart.

Also on this same disk was a directory of pictures taken by my son so just for fun, here's his 5th photo. It's the Disney World garden from a trip when he was 7. You can see the Mickey and Minnie topiaries (and that's the back of MojaveAuntie)

No, you didn't miss #4 here, I didn't do it, I was behind and it was Valentine's themed which doesn't do much for this single gal right now. But you can see Lee's post on #4 here.

Appetizer: Have you ever travelled outside your native country?: Nope
Soup: What's the farthest from home you have ever ventured?: Funny, when I lived in California, the farthest I had traveled was to Wisconsin. Now living in Wisconsin, the farthest I travel is to California.
Salad: Do you plan to travel abroad any time in the future, however long it may be? If so, where?: I have absolutely no plans to travel abroad.
Entré: What would deter you most, fear of being targeted as an American, the security considerations of your on nation, or something else?: At this point, security is not deterring me, budget and life are doing that. Because of this, I haven't seriously thought about whether or not the security concerns would prevent me from traveling. I think it would depend on where I was going.
Dessert: If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would you most want to go?: Ireland or Australia. Both are places that fascinate me. My Dad went to Australia when I was a kid. I remember reading up on it at that time and I've wanted to go ever since. Ireland looks absolutely beautiful, wonderful castles and rich heritage.
